Rolling Alley
Industrial Design & Research
Game addon for Dungeons and Dragons
Overview
The Rolling Alley is an add on to the game Dungeons and Dragons. By adding a target to the rolling area the players not only get to enjoy the outcome of the number they roll but also get to show their real life dexterity adding a little bit of skill into the game.
Challenge
During a game of Dungeons and Dragons I realized after playing the game for years that my friends and I would pre-roll our attacks before our turn started. This was in stark contrast to when I first started playing where we would huddle around the dice as they rolled to join in the excitement of a winning dice roll and a losing dice roll. How could I bring back the excitement of dice rolling?
Solution
In order to take the excitement back and make rolling dice exciting I needed to add another element to the interaction. I considered the elements of rolling like advantage, (rolling twice and taking the better result) disadvantage, and modifiers (add or subtracting the final roll by a specified amount). This end product would need to ensure that all of those elements were not only still included but could be expanded on.
Outcome
By including a targeting grid in the Rolling Alley a Dungeon Master could utilize location of the dice roll to include some effect in game. targeting could be enhanced to say not only do you need to roll high but you need to land the dice in the correct location or vice versa.
Key Takeaway
Iteration and Playtesting led me to remove unnecessary complexity from the game and focus on the things that would make the rolling alley most enjoyable for players
